The First Battery In the 1790s, Italian scientist Alessandro Volta discovered that sinking two metals into a special kind of chemical called an acid created a tiny electric current. In 1800, he put together a device consisting of disks made from the metals copper and zinc. Each of these disks was separated by a piece of cardboard soaked in a weak acid or salt water. He found that electricity flowed through the pile of disks, which he called a “voltaic pile.” He had invented the world’s first battery!
